Week 2: Introduction

Hey everyone my name is Bridget Lanier and I am majoring in Animal Science.  I was born and raised in Bradenton, FL.  It's south of Tampa and north of Venice and neighbors the Gulf of Mexico.  I have a younger brother named Trey who is a senior in high school.  He loves to dirt bike, fish, kayak, and is a talented artist when it comes to drawing fish.  My mother Margaret, was actually born and raised in Gainesville.  Her father taught electrical engineering here at the University of Florida.  She is a very talented photographer and currently does marketing for my dad’s work.  My father Sidney, is a Marine Architect and designs boats.  He is from New Orleans and grew up in the bayou pretty much.  Later on I might share a few interesting stories about him growing up.  One of which involves him and his buddies fishing and somehow snakes and a dead gator come into play.

A major creative outlet and stress reliever for me would be photography.  When I feel worked up or I need a break from life, I take my camera, head outside and take pictures.  Photography relaxes me and pushes me creatively.  I enjoy taking pictures of insects and flowers.  Taking pictures of bugs is difficult, you have to be very patient.  Any sudden movement and they're gone.  I'll make sure to post pictures in future blogs!

To this day my favorite part about growing up in Florida are all the amazing natural beauties this state has to offer!  I'm not a big city or party person, I prefer being in the great outdoors and enjoying nature.  Growing up my family would go to state parks, springs, and the beaches.  When I was in middle school we would often drive out to Peace River and walk along/in the cool water for hours. We would collect shark teeth, everything from Sand Tigers to Bull Sharks, Sting Rays (they look like long molar teeth), Tiger Sharks and the greatest find of all the Megalodon.  Yes, believe it or not you can find shark teeth in freshwater.  If you have a spaghetti strainer go out to a creek, stream, river, or spring and sift the sand that has crumbles of rocks in it.  You'd be surprised what you find!

During spring break I really want to go shark teeth hunting, I haven’t gone in years!  When my brother and I got into high school we didn’t have much time to spare to go on these outings.  I was heavily involved in sports and FFA.  I ran cross-country, was a starting defender for varsity soccer, and competed in track and field.  Sports kept me in shape and active, but my passion and what I looked forward to the most was showing animals and photography, along with competing in FFA.  I showed poultry, a dog, plants, entered photography into the county fairs, and competed in Floriculture.  Sports really affected how much I could participate in FFA events, but I always made sure that by County Fair time I would be able to show and compete.  FFA sprung my curiosity and passion in the Agriculture and Animal Industry.  I would love to go to Vet School and become a Veterinarian.  I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.  However, I recently and ironically developed an allergy.  Can you guess? If you guessed animal or pet allergy you are correct.  I am allergic to all things fluffy, which is pretty much every animal that goes through a vet clinic.  Over the fall I interned as a Veterinarian’s Assistant back home at a vet clinic and I was basically sick the entire time.  I’d compare it to a sinus infection.  Last year my goal was to make it into Vet School.  Now I’m not really sure what I want to do, which career I want to pursue, or where I will be in the next five years.  This semester I’m taking Introduction to Animal Science and we will be exploring all areas and potential careers within the Animal and Agriculture Industry.  Who knows, maybe by the end of this semester I might know which career will be best for me!
