Week One/Two Reading Reflection

Week One/Two Reading Reflection

I just realized I accidentally mixed up last weeks reading with this weeks. I will be doing week one/two's reading reflection.  I apologize for this.

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?

The very first page was the biggest surprise for me, in fact I'm not so sure that I agree with it entirely.  The author makes a claim that small business owners are not entrepreneurs.  It is all based on growth and profits, and he believes that small businesses will never dominate and are not innovative.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

I'm not sure that I really understand what the author means by "gazelle".  Does this pertain to a business or a firm?  Is a business and a firm the same thing?  I suppose this is why I'm confused by the term.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?

Why would you claim that small business owners are not entrepreneurs?
Do you find that a majority of developing business have owners who have a degree or not?

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

As I said in question one, I completely disagree with the author that small business owners are not entrepreneurs.  Just because a small business does not have the money or name-brand recognition like Walmart doesn't make them any less innovative.  In fact I find many small business to be far more innovative and customer friendly than commercial ones.  For example, Aquatropics specializes in selling aquatic fish and marine life.  Their fish are always healthy and employees are happy to assist you unlike some commercial pet stores where dead fish can be found on the bottom of tanks.

Identify Local Opportunities

Identifying Local Opportunities

Brothers Charged with Pointing Lasers at Sarasota Sheriff's Helicopter

  • In this article two brother's were recorded and arrested for shining laser lights into a helicopter cockpit.
  • When lasers are shined into a cockpit the pilot experiences vision loss.  If the light hits directly into the pilot's eyes he or she could suffer permanent damage.
  • The pilots of these police helicopters are dealing with the problem.  What seems to be a joke or fun for some could potentially have major consequences.

Attacker Beat Employee at Burger King in Bradenton Over Slow Service

  •  Two men became aggravated with how long their orders were taking and attacked a Burger King employee over this.
  • The store was not able to keep up with orders and took a little longer than normal to get food out to customers.  Unfortunately, took impatient men took out their anger on the employee.
  • This is a split problem: customers dealing with slow service and Burger King employees dealing with angry customers

Winter Storms Cause Flight Cancellations at SRQ, TPA

http://www.bradenton.com/news/weather/article56036620.html
  • Flights are cancelled due to a major winter storm coming in on Friday.
  • Due to weather conditions it is unsafe for aircraft to travel to locations out of state.
  • People will not be able to take flights that they have planned in advance.

Supervisors to Move Forward with Memorial Bench on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard

http://www.bradenton.com/news/local/community/lakewood-ranch-herald/article55854605.html
  • A memorial for three Lakewood Ranch resident's who passed away in car accidents will have a bench made in their honor.
  • The problem is that the community is putting up a bench rather than figuring out a way to make the dangerous turn where two separate fatal accidents occurred safer.
  • The residence are facing a problem.  Yes it is kind and sweet that the community is setting up a memorial, but it doesn't solve the problem that caused these terrible incidents to occur.

Florida Bill to Mandate School Recess would Increase Unstructured Play Time

http://www.bradenton.com/news/local/education/article55870555.html
  • Bradenton schools may be increasing the amount of recess time elementary schools are required to have.  Currently schools are required that students have 150 minutes of physical activity per week.  This follows concerns and complaints from parents who want their children to have more down time during the day.
  • Physical activity is vital for children filled with energy, but schools face a problem with time.  They will have to restructure their teaching plans and schedules.
  • Teachers will be faced with the problem. How are they going to keep up with curriculum while providing the required amount of recess time?

Week 3: Very Short Interview No. 1

Short Interview No. 1

Growing up as a photographer's daughter I met many entrepreneurs in the wedding industry.  I  worked as a photographer's assistant for five years and we would often team up with other photographers when taking on huge events.  One of these photographers was Paula Herron.  She is located in Virginia Beach and has owned her business Paula Herron Photography for 20 years.  Paula has an established small business and her work focuses on newborns, children, weddings, and portrait settings.

1. Why did you choose to start a business in photography?
Photography has been a major passion of mine and continues to grow.  I always enjoyed taking pictures of family and friends capturing their emotions and memories.  I wanted to share my passion of photography by capturing memories that clients hold dear to them. It is nice to have a job that you love.

2. How do you handle the stress of owning a business?
Organization is key to any business success, that and good partners. The type of business I am in is extremely stressful. The wedding side is honestly the worst. My team and I have one shot and we do not have any room for mistakes. No redo’s or money back on these. Again, organization is a key and creating a team that can pull it all together in a seamless motion is what it takes. We each have our tasks and there is a check and balance system to confirm everything is being done properly, efficiently and to the clients best interest. We have very little time no matter who we are working with to make everyone happy. Even when we are back in our offices down-loading and creating the end product it is again a series of steps, checks and balances. Somewhat of a well-choreographed dance that makes you smile and be at peace when it is all over. Well if it is performed correctly. But always remember, while the passion for me is photography and I have chosen this as my business, I do need to find “me time” with it to continue that passion. So to finally curve off any lingering stress, there’s nothing like a good walk along a river with my camera or the beach at sunset, and the only expectation as to what I photograph is whatever I come across.

3. Do you have some recommendations for people trying to start or grow their business?
I partnered up with someone who not only was a great photographer but graduated with a degree in Marketing. I could not have been more lucky. The saying that it is “who you know” is so true when it comes to business. If you are at all a little shy or not one to talk it up then you should really look into having someone help you out. Or learn to get out there. Join groups affiliated with your business and 1 tier outside your business. And I mean be active. Go to meetings and be a part of the action. Advertising is important but don’t do it blindly be mindful of how it is done and keep track of what does or doesn’t work. Money is hard to come by and you need to keep track of those simple things. While the internet is the in thing, it is really reaching your demographic audience or do you need to reach them a different way? No everyone hits social media and not everyone reads the paper. But word of mouth is free and your friends and previous customers are always your best customers. Keep smiling, keep organized, market and advertise yourself smart and save up for your rainy day!

Interviewing Paula Herron has made it clear in what it takes to become an entrepreneur.  It's vital that when you are opening a business that you will be working at every single day you better be passionate about it!  If you don not have a strong bond with your idea the more difficult it will be for you to grow your business.  This is very true and I never thought of the relationship you have with your work.  If you are very passionate the stronger the bond and the more you'll want to invest yourself in it.  If you don't have a strong bond then the less you'll look forward to working and the longer it will take for you to grow your business or it will likely fail.

Week 3: Solving the World's Biggest Problems

Solving the World's Biggest Problems

1. The Treatment of Women

I’d like to start off with a powerful and impactful quote said by Taina Bien-Aime…

“There is not one single country where women can feel absolutely safe”

Women in many countries including our own are not treated as equal to men.  We are seen as objects or property, not as a Life and of intelligence.  We face incredible barriers, and those in less developed countries face far worse challenges.  Nightmares for us is a reality for them.  Imagine you live in the fields of Africa and you must go collect water for your family.  As you forage you must constantly be aware of your surrounding because at any moment you could be spotted.  Not by a lion but by dangerous men who seek to rape women. Can you imagine living day to day knowing that at any moment you could face such physical and mental violence just because you are a woman?
Women unfortunately do not always have the ability to take charge of their own destinies.  This is the problem.  Women are forced to rely 100% on their husband.  Some are even forced into marriages early on in life (in Afghanistan many girls are under 16 years old).  They are unable to receive an education or their families do not of sending their daughters out of fear and concern for her well-being.
Though there has been improvement in women’s rights we still have a long way to go.  I personally do not know what could be done to solve this problem in its entirety but we can take small steps.  We must have cultural awareness in order to improve.  If anything I would have local ambassadors who understand the communities and encourage change of mindset through education and involvement.

2. The Treatment of Animals

One year ago I watched a video that o this day makes my blood boil and my skin hurt.  In Eastern Asia a slaughter house was skinning Raccoon Dogs alive.  In the video you can see them hanging on a hook, swinging back and forth, then a person began skinning them.  The screams of pain were haunting and sickening. This is inhumane and a sin.  I have never been so disgusted in my entire life.  This happens throughout the world, improper methods of slaughtering animals.  A life is a life and should be treated as such.
There needs to be stricter slaughter house regulations/inspections and those that are performing inhumane methods should be shut down and charged immediately.

3.  People Unaware of Global or Local News

This is mostly based on social media and what it shares with the population.  The news for the most part does not discuss global events or are not giving proper details.  They don’t talk about what, how, and why it happened rather they focus on what people are posting on social media.  They are focusing on ratings and popularity.
Social media is the main source of information for people these days.  Most articles that are posted tend be difficult to read and get into.  Perhaps there can be an app that is entertaining, easy to understand, and informative.

4. Protecting the Environment

The environment is constantly changing, and Earth cannot keep up with our demands.  Growing and developing is vital for the survival of a country, but at one point do we take into consideration the coast of our growth?  I believe we take for granted what mother nature has given us.  Instead of preserving and enjoying her beauty we are scaring her shopping malls and parking lots.
Instead of starting new developments on the untouched ecosystems why don't we fix up the places that have been abandoned?  Such as old apartment complexes and shopping malls.  Back home in Bradenton a shutdown and abandoned hotel next to the Manatee River was made new again and is now thriving!

5. The Growing Population

As of 2014 The population of the world is 7.2 Billion people with 4.4 billion from Asia, 740.7 million from Europe, 618.1 million from Latin America/Caribbean,  353.4 million from North America, 38.6 million from Oceania, and 1.1 billion from Africa.  In 2050 the population is predicted to reach 9.7 billion!
How are we going to support the ever increasing population?  I believe it all comes down to sex education and understanding the effects of their decisions. Along with this, minds need to come together to develop innovative products to support our future generations.

6. Social Media's Influence

Social media is involved in our lives to the point we don't even realize it.  Does this picture make me look good, how many likes will I get, how long until I get to 1000 friends.  Everything we do is to please others not ourselves.  We need confirmation that what we are doing is amazing, unique, and special.  That we are funny, that people like us or what we do.  I can tell you right now I love instagram and pinterest, and it's sad to admit but when I don't get a like for a picture I post it makes me feel insignificant and that no one cares.  People judge you by how many followers you have or how many likes you received.  Social media is a wolf wrapped in sheep's clothing.   It can be dangerous.  People no matter where there are in the world are vulnerable to the effects.  Cyber bullying, lack of privacy, and we no longer have a sense of connection to people or our communities. Informing the public is the only way we can solve this.  To make people aware of the effects of social media over the past 15 years.

7. People Living in Locations that can not Support a Population

Hunger is a terrible thing, I could not imagine living and not knowing when I would have my next meal or a sip of water.
I understand that moving a community from one location to another is not feasible.  But at the same time what do you expect when you live in a location not suited for human inhabitants.  I know this sounds harsh but it is true.  The only way you can survive in harsh environments is to adapt.  I believe that technology and innovative products can help solve this problem.  If we are unable to move a community to a more suitable location then we must develop a new way of life to help them survive.  For instance in Africa they created a portable irrigation system that allows farmers to grow produce in any season.  This will increase food productivity and supplies along with take away the stress for farmers dealing with the unpredictable weather.  This solution alone has helped over 660,000 people out of poverty!

8. Waste

For lunch you ate a peanut butter sandwich minus the crust, a fruit cup, and a bag of chips.  You then throw away the remains before heading to class. A plastic baggy, a bag for your chips, a spoon, a plastic cup, and the slices of crust you didn't eat.  When you look at it this way you realize just how much waste a normal lunch produces.  Companies throughout the world need to figure out more efficient products when it comes to packaging materials.  According to WasteFreeLunches.org an average child can "generate 67 pounds of waste per school year". I believe that if people used reusable packaging items then this will help decrease the amount of waste we send to landfills.

9. Obesity

Today media has made obesity seem like people have no control over it and that it's not a problem.  Wrong!  People have control of this!  Before you say "Bridget you don't understand, people don't have a choice sometimes", actually I do.  I have hypothyroidism.  Hypothyroidism affects our metabolism and we can gain weight more easily than those who do not suffer from this.  This is not a reason for me to become fat, "oh I have hypothyroidism, that's why I'm overweight", nope not going to happen.  I watch what I eat and I exercise, and because of my lifestyle choice I am not overweight.  People now a days do not take control of their lives and try to fix the problems they are complaining about.  That's how I see obesity.  You can prevent it or manage it.  The world needs to stop treating obesity like a permanent disease, it's a lifestyle choice.

10.  Bullying or Shaming

No matter where you are, who you are, or what you do people will always judge you.  Conformity is a terrible thing, and if you don't fit in a bubble then you feel the effects.  Bullying and shaming is more intense today due to social media's influence.  If people don't have a certain hairstyle or clothes they are bullied for not dressing up like everyone else.  If they are introverted, then extroverts shame them for their personality type.  This has a tremendous psychological impact on any person of any culture.  I'm not really sure if there is a way to solve this problem, it's unfortunately part of life and has been for thousands of years!
