Identifying Local Opportunities

Brothers Charged with Pointing Lasers at Sarasota Sheriff's Helicopter

  • In this article two brother's were recorded and arrested for shining laser lights into a helicopter cockpit.
  • When lasers are shined into a cockpit the pilot experiences vision loss.  If the light hits directly into the pilot's eyes he or she could suffer permanent damage.
  • The pilots of these police helicopters are dealing with the problem.  What seems to be a joke or fun for some could potentially have major consequences.

Attacker Beat Employee at Burger King in Bradenton Over Slow Service

  •  Two men became aggravated with how long their orders were taking and attacked a Burger King employee over this.
  • The store was not able to keep up with orders and took a little longer than normal to get food out to customers.  Unfortunately, took impatient men took out their anger on the employee.
  • This is a split problem: customers dealing with slow service and Burger King employees dealing with angry customers

  • Flights are cancelled due to a major winter storm coming in on Friday.
  • Due to weather conditions it is unsafe for aircraft to travel to locations out of state.

Supervisors to Move Forward with Memorial Bench on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard

http://www.bradenton.com/news/local/community/lakewood-ranch-herald/article55854605.html
  • A memorial for three Lakewood Ranch resident's who passed away in car accidents will have a bench made in their honor.
  • The problem is that the community is putting up a bench rather than figuring out a way to make the dangerous turn where two separate fatal accidents occurred safer.
  • The residence are facing a problem.  Yes it is kind and sweet that the community is setting up a memorial, but it doesn't solve the problem that caused these terrible incidents to occur.

Florida Bill to Mandate School Recess would Increase Unstructured Play Time

http://www.bradenton.com/news/local/education/article55870555.html
  • Bradenton schools may be increasing the amount of recess time elementary schools are required to have.  Currently schools are required that students have 150 minutes of physical activity per week.  This follows concerns and complaints from parents who want their children to have more down time during the day.
  • Physical activity is vital for children filled with energy, but schools face a problem with time.  They will have to restructure their teaching plans and schedules.
  • Teachers will be faced with the problem. How are they going to keep up with curriculum while providing the required amount of recess time?

  1. Your posts about the laser pointer and the attacker at Burger King were the most interesting to me. Stuff like this makes me question humanity. I just can not believe that someone would go as far as attacking someone due to slow service at a restaurant. Also I can not believe that two brothers would threaten the life of a pilot. I feel like someone should know that they could make someone crash. Sometimes it amazes me how stupid some people can be.

  2. Hello Bridget. Your list contains some very important yet overseen problems. Powerful laser pointers that can burn holes on curtains can be purchased easily on Amazon by anyone anywhere. People need to know that they would face severe consequences if they mishandle these tools. You are 100% right on the memorial bench. The bench itself seems to me more like a decoration to hide the dangerous turn. Something as simple as a speed bump can be implemented if people care to think about a solution. Something must be done to save lives.
