Week One/Two Reading Reflection

Week One/Two Reading Reflection

I just realized I accidentally mixed up last weeks reading with this weeks. I will be doing week one/two's reading reflection.  I apologize for this.

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?

The very first page was the biggest surprise for me, in fact I'm not so sure that I agree with it entirely.  The author makes a claim that small business owners are not entrepreneurs.  It is all based on growth and profits, and he believes that small businesses will never dominate and are not innovative.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

I'm not sure that I really understand what the author means by "gazelle".  Does this pertain to a business or a firm?  Is a business and a firm the same thing?  I suppose this is why I'm confused by the term.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?

Why would you claim that small business owners are not entrepreneurs?
Do you find that a majority of developing business have owners who have a degree or not?

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

As I said in question one, I completely disagree with the author that small business owners are not entrepreneurs.  Just because a small business does not have the money or name-brand recognition like Walmart doesn't make them any less innovative.  In fact I find many small business to be far more innovative and customer friendly than commercial ones.  For example, Aquatropics specializes in selling aquatic fish and marine life.  Their fish are always healthy and employees are happy to assist you unlike some commercial pet stores where dead fish can be found on the bottom of tanks.
